Tourism - Travel

The tourism and travel sector is one of the largest in the world. Even with so many self-service travel websites, the industry is ever-changing and constantly on the rise, which means now more than ever, there is a need for knowledgeable travel and tourism professionals. This two-year Ontario College Diploma co-op program will give you the knowledge and hands-on learning experience for a career with tourism businesses, travel agencies, tour companies, airlines and more!

Overview

This dynamic program focuses on travel advising, customer sales and service, flights and fares, group tour management, travel business operations, package holidays and hotel operations. Our tourism courses will also teach you world geography and the latest computer technology used in the industry, as well as skills in marketing, customer relations, promotion and social media.  

Gain valuable experience with a co-op work term consisting of 420 hours of paid employment. Enjoy an (optional) international field study trip on a seven-night Caribbean cruise as well as local field trips and regular guest lecturers from the industry. In your final semester, you’ll complete an international group tour capstone project where you’ll create a business plan, marketing plan and presentation to launch the tour to classmates and peers and industry partners. Students also have the opportunity to participate in student mentoring through the Baxter Student Ambassador Program.

For further international experiences, students may apply to study abroad for a semester in Finland, Ireland or the Netherlands, or take advantage of our pathway opportunities after graduation to complete a degree with one of our partner institutions including the Limerick Institute of Technology in Ireland

Program Overview

This two-year program consists of four academic levels and one paid co-op term. Students are prepared, through a wide variety of career-related courses and industry work experience, to meet the limitless challenges of the dynamic tourism/travel industry. Students are prepared for careers in the multi-faceted tourism industry with emphasis on travel counselling. Strong emphasis is placed on development of personality and attitudes necessary for success in this customer service field.

Developed in conjunction with the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA), the program is designed to ensure that graduates meet the standards and qualifications of the Association, and students may seek certification upon graduation.

Every person working for a registered Ontario retail travel agency and selling travel services or providing travel advice to the public must, by law, meet the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) Education Standards. The opportunity to seek certification will be provided.

The Tourism – Travel program offers a cooperative education component, which provides students the opportunity to gain invaluable first-hand experience in their chosen field. Here are some co-op jobs that have kick-started the careers of some Tourism – Travel students before even graduating! 

Ticket Sales Agent
Be the go-to person for informing customers about boarding procedures; printing, sorting and distributing boarding passes, explaining products and services and answering questions from customers.

Front Desk Representative
Provide professional and personalized interactions with guests throughout their check-in/check-out process. You will also serve as a main contact responding to inquiries and providing information.to resort guests and staff.

Campground Administration
Learn the entire process of running a campground, including scheduling reservations, informing customers of local attractions, retail experience in the camp store and balancing end-of-day reports.

Career Information

Graduates of Fanshawe’s Tourism – Travel program will have the opportunity to work for tour operators, travel agencies, airlines, transportation companies, hotels, destination management companies and government tourism offices. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge and experience to establish a career in tour management, tourism product sales and marketing, wholesale and retail reservations, customer service, travel consulting, guest services, and niche travel and tourism.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements. 
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

The most valuable employees in the Tourism and Travel Industry have an awareness of a variety of destinations, as well as an understanding of the appeal to various customers. This course guides the development of product knowledge as it pertains to Indigenous cultures and the ability of the student to recognize the value of the tourism related attractions and experiences within Canada and the United States.
TRAV-1011Travel Fundamentals3
The travel industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the global marketplace. Students will develop research skills as they analyze such topics as documentation, health requirements, currency and transportation options. Special emphasis will be placed on the logistics of airline travel.

A course designed to develop the fundamental knowledge and skill required to plan, produce and present multi-media communications, with emphasis placed on practical use of current and emerging technologies including social media.

The hospitality industry is without a doubt one of the strongest, fastest growing industries today. This course is an introduction to that industry and how Tourism affects us all. The students will gain an appreciation for where our industry has come from and what the future has in store. They will also recognize the numerous career opportunities available to them in such areas as Fast Food, Hotels, Luxury Cruise Lines, Resorts, Institutions, Casinos and many more.

Students will learn about fundamental concepts in Cultural Anthropology and how they relate to themselves as well as current trends in Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts. Students will practice applying the theoretical perspective of Cultural Materialism and perform academic research and reporting. This course promotes the understanding of social behaviours and ideas within larger cultural contexts and encourages students to think critically about issues related to diversity, relationship building and ultimately success in their chosen programs of study and as global citizens.
WRIT-1042Reason & Writing 1-Tourism/Hospitality3
This course will introduce tourism and hospitality students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
COMP-1517Technology for Hospitality3
Every day technology impacts how individuals work and live. This course will expose students to the range of software currently used in the hospitality sector. Students will develop their skills in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation tools. The course will also explore file management, research skills, outlook and online collaboration tools for the modern workplace.
COOP-1020Co-operative Education Employment Prep1
This workshop will provide an overview of the Co-operative Education consultants and students' roles and responsibilities as well as the Co-operative Education Policy. It will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to co-operative education work assignments and will prepare students for their work term.
