Magnetic Resonance Imaging-2024/2025

Level 1
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
MRIP-6006Patient Care & Safety for MRI4
This course focuses on MR safety principles, including concepts that relate to MR equipment and the unique risks to anyone in the MR environment. The importance of taking on the role of a leader in education (of self and others) in the prevention of MR incidents is emphasized. Various decision-making strategies based on developed guidelines for safe MR practices are introduced and implemented. A focus on cultural diversity and lifespan considerations when caring for and communicating with patients, families and members of both the inter and intra-professional team are discussed. The professional and appropriate delivery of care before, during and after MRI procedures, magnet and patient-related emergencies within the MR environment and documentation is emphasized. The content also provides basic concepts of pharmacology, and covers the instruction and practice of venipuncture, and safe administration of contrast media and/or intravenous medications. In addition, content introduces quality assurance measures used in maintaining image quality.
MRIP-6007Physics for MRI5
This course focuses on the physical principles, equipment and instrumentation of Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging. The application, advantages and limitations of various MR scanning parameters and protocols, and the impact on image contrast will be emphasized. Knowledge of physics principles for image formation, reconstruction and manipulation will be presented. Advanced techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS), Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA/MRV), and Echo planar Imaging (EPI) will be studied.
MRIP-6008Anatomy for MRI3
This course focuses on the study of human anatomy as seen in axial, sagittal, coronal and oblique planes for the neurologic, abdominal and pelvic, musculoskeletal and vascular systems. Application of anatomical knowledge will be applied to MR images and other clinical imaging modalities.

Level 2
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
MRIP-6009Procedures and Research in MRI4
This course focuses on both procedures and research in MRI. The content covers clinical applications for cardiac, vascular and breast imaging. Several complex scanning options and post-procedural image processing (e.g., maximum-intensity projection [MIP], multiplanar reformatting [MPR]), Apparent Diffusion Coefficient [ADC] etc.) are covered. The course will also look at the role of research and advancing applications within Magnetic Resonance.
MRIP-6010MRI Clinical Preparation1
This course will facilitate the student in preparation for clinical practicum placements, including finalizing pre-placement requirements. Concepts pertaining to professionalism, communication, analysis and problem-solving and health and safety will be emphasized.
MRIP-6011Applied Science for Mri4
This course focuses on performance of MR imaging procedures related to the central nervous and musculoskeletal systems, and the neck, thorax and abdominopelvic regions. The content covers specific clinical applications, available coils and their use. Preprocedural considerations as well as patient positioning criteria and identification of landmarks that allow optimal visualization of anatomy/pathology are discussed. Content lists and explains anatomical planes considerations, as well as signal characteristics of normal and abnormal structures. Content identifies protocol considerations such as sequences and parameters used to create MR images. The content also introduces measures used to maintain image quality and minimise artifacts and Specific Absorption Rates (SAR).
MRIP-6012Pathology for MRI3
This course focuses on how to recognize common pathologies, anomalies, and conditions seen in MR imaging. Focus will be placed on diseases of the central nervous, musculoskeletal, respiratory and reproductive systems, and the neck, thorax and abdomen and associated vasculature. Knowledge of pathophysiology as it relates to the clinical procedures by evaluating images for normal results and variants will be applied. Learning will be enhanced by readings, in-class discussions and PowerPoint presentations.

Level 3
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
MRIP-6014MRI Clinical Practicum27.75
The purpose of this course is to allow the student to apply the theoretical knowledge obtained during the didactic portion of the program to the clinical environment. The student will spend this time at an affiliated clinical hospital under the supervision of a clinical co-coordinator or staff technologist.
MRIP-6013MRI Consolidation and Review1
The purpose of this course is to review the material previously presented in the theory courses as well as the knowledge attained in the clinical practicum to help prepare the student for the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) national MRI certification exam.

Program Residency
Students Must Complete a Minimum of 14 credits in this
program at Fanshawe College to meet the Program Residency
requirement and graduate from this program
