Level 1
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
WRIT-1037Reason & Writing 1-Contemporary Media3
This course will introduce contemporary media students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
BRJR-1046News/Sports/Voice3
An introduction to news/sports announcing and lineup skills. Attention will be paid to use of audio, story selection in news and sportscasts as well as play by play sports broadcast. On air performance is stressed using voice development techniques. Professor will identify strengths and weaknesses and assign exercises for correction or improvement.

Learn and apply critical thinking and interview skills to become a credible and creative storyteller with editorial judgment. Pitch, gather, produce news stories and longer form audio interviews and produced features.
BRJR-1048Newsroom Lab/Audio Production3
Students will be instructed in the use of basic news production equipment enabling them to perform day to day duties of a news reporter, newscaster, news producer and news editor. Students will also learn policies and procedures of a working newsroom and be introduced to methods of following current events.

An introduction to broadcast news writing with attention paid to storytelling that's clear, concise, accurate and legally fair. Students write stories and newscasts with emphasis on focused story set-up, and a conversational style of writing with depth of content.
BRJR-1045Inclusive Journalism3
The course focuses on the role of journalists to cover racialized and marginalized communities in our diverse society. Students will be educated on the history and rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Unconscious bias is discussed, and how to have inclusive, diverse and equitable representation and perspectives in a range of stories.
POLI-1015Canadian Politics 13
This course will introduce students to the ideas and concepts that are crucial to understanding politics. Students will learn to employ the correct terminology and identify the key players in their coverage of the Canadian political scene.

Level 2

COMM-3075Communications for Media3
This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of media, focuses on professional written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing - organization, grammar, style, clarity, and tone - are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the media workplace in order to meet the needs of employers and/or the communities they will serve.
BRJR-1043Newscasting/Media Law3
Students continue to develop and improve their editorial judgement, news line-up and presentation skills. This course also covers aspects of Canadian law that relate directly to journalism.
BRJR-1050Newsroom Lab/Audio Production3
Learn and apply advanced news producing techniques in the field and in the newsroom as a reporter, newscaster, podcaster, and as a team member on a live news show. This course includes current events discussions, and guest speakers about news beats and the types of stories a journalist covers.
BRJR-3028Interview/Podcasting2
The course advances the craft of interviewing, storytelling and creative use of sound in the production of audio features, podcasts and news stories. Students are introduced to industry standards in all aspects of news and current affairs programming.
BRJR-1051Newswriting & Reporting2
Advanced introduction to writing news stories in broadcast style, and learning to write website articles. Focus is on headlines, story content, fairness, clarity and creativity, correct facts, grammar and CP Style. Students are required to recognize stories with news value and produce them for CFRL and CIXX-FM on-air and online.
BRJR-1044Multimedia Journalism/Tech Lab4
An introduction to mobile journalism to learn the practical skills of capturing high quality video, images and sound for multiplatform storytelling. The student creates multimedia digital content, develops their professional online profile, and learns to use social media effectively and responsibly as a journalistic tool.

Level 3

On-air performance is evaluated as the student gains experience as a newscaster in a working deadline driven broadcast newsroom.
BRJR-3030Broadcast Reporting4
Students gain practical experience as journalists working in the 106.9 CIXX-FM newsroom. They cover the community and report on everything from breaking news and politics to sports and entertainment. Stories are produced daily for broadcast and other media platforms.
BRJR-3032Newsroom Lab & Careers6
Students apply all their learned practical skills to operate the CIXX-FM newsroom on-air and online as newscasters, sportscasters and reporters. Emphasis on meeting professional expectations.
BRJR-3031Multimedia Storytelling5
Write and produce news stories and content for the radio station's website 1069thex.ca and share on social media. Emphasis on story content, CP Style writing, video creation and media-rich articles. This course is team taught, and students will learn more about podcast creation and produce work for on-air programming.
BRJR-3033Newswriting3
Students continue to learn and practice broadcast newswriting techniques as newscasters on Fanshawe's CRTC-licenced station 106.9 The X. They also produce stories for broadcast and websites.

Level 4
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
BRJR-3034Advanced News Presentation3
Students demonstrate an advanced level of news preparation, presentation and performance as a newscaster on the radio station and on social platforms.
BRJR-3035Advanced Broadcast Reporting3
This course advances the practical reporting experiences of a broadcast journalist to meet deadlines with quick turnaround and also produce longer form news features with depth of content.
BRJR-3036Newsroom Lab & Pathways4
Students demonstrate professional expectations of a broadcast journalist daily in the newsroom. They produce a demo and resume to apply for internship and work opportunities. They also learn about entrepreneurial opportunities through guest lectures and practical application.
BRJR-5005Advanced Multimedia Storytelling3
This course expands professional expectations for producing podcasts, creating videos and media-rich news articles and effective social posts for CIXX-FM. Students will be multimedia multi-platform content creators.
BRJR-5003Media Internship3.6
The internship provides students with 120-150 hours of additional work experience, professional contacts and feedback. Students can complete the credit at an external media outlet or in the CIXX-FM newsroom. Internships usually take place during the final month of the final term in partnership with the company, student and supervising professors.
BRJR-5004Advanced Newswriting2
Students are coached on advanced broadcast newswriting techniques as newscasters on Fanshawe's CRTC-licenced station 106.9 The X. They also produce news stories with emphasis on leading with the latest, attribution, readability and descriptive writing.
