This course is an introductory level course on the basic elements of event management. Students will gain an overview of the event industry, associations and designations. Students will discuss various types of events, the different approach methods to planning a successful event and the core competencies required for today's event planners.
ANTH-1012Cultural Anthropology3
Students will learn about fundamental concepts in Cultural Anthropology and how these concepts relate to themselves, and how to reflect upon how to connect anthropological perspectives to Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts. Students will practice applying the theoretical anthropological perspectives to a variety of topics and perform academic research and reporting. This course promotes the understanding of social and cultural behaviours and ideas within larger cultural contexts. This course encourages students to think critically about issues related to indigenous studies, diversity, relationship building and ultimately to their chosen programs of study and as global citizens.
WRIT-1042Reason & Writing 1-Tourism/Hospitality3
This course will introduce tourism and hospitality students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
COMP-1517Technology for Hospitality3
Every day technology impacts how individuals work and live. This course will expose students to the range of software currently used in the hospitality sector. Students will develop their skills in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation tools. The course will also explore file management, research skills, outlook and online collaboration tools for the modern workplace.
MGMT-1259Event Sales & Service3
The business of events is highly competitive and event planners must have strong selling skills, a customer-focused strategy and an appreciation of superior service. In this course, students study the art and psychology of selling and learn the principles and techniques of strategic selling. Students will develop the skills required for prospecting, making sales calls, relationship building, conducting sales meetings and presentations and negotiating and closing the sale. The course utilises case studies, presentations, discussions and team participation, and places emphasis on developing the student's confidence and professionalism in communicating with event stakeholders and corporate decision makers.
PLAN-1033Sports & Festivals3
The sports and festival tourism industries are growing and the aim of this course is to introduce students to this dynamic sector and the exciting employment opportunities it offers. Students will learn about the key players in the industry (including event staff, exhibitors, volunteers, sponsors and the suppliers of goods and services) and how they work together to successfully host events. Students will also use tools, templates and techniques to enhance and assist in successful and innovative events.
COOP-1020Co-operative Education Employment Prep1
This workshop will provide an overview of the Co-operative Education consultants and students' roles and responsibilities as well as the Co-operative Education Policy. It will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to co-operative education work assignments and will prepare students for their work term.

In this course students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to create event websites and social media content to market and communicate to target audiences about upcoming events. Students will learn basic web page design principles, will design and publish web pages and use desktop publishing to create engaging promotional materials. Strategies for using social media to promote events are also explored including twitter, Instagram and facebook.
FDMG-1116Food Service & Catering3
Food service is a vital element in event planning. This course aims to develop the student's understanding of the catering and events industry, including specific terminology used and common types of meal service. Under the tutelage of event and catering professionals, students will study topics such as menu planning and design, room layouts, pricing catering, calculating alcohol requirements and contract preparation and negotiation. The culminating project allows students to demonstrate their knowledge with a presentation of a themed event plan.
PLAN-1034Weddings & Occasions3
Taught by industry professionals, this course is designed to provide students with an understanding of different types of occasions and has a specific focus on wedding planning. Students learn how to develop client relations, sell event services and how to charge for event planning services. Topics covered include putting together an event concept, event budgets, creating the event contract, key clauses used by venues and creating the event design, including all elements of decor. The course utilises case studies and guest speakers to enhance student understanding.

There are over 170,000 charitable and non-profit organizations in Canada, employing over two million Canadians. Well-trained fundraising professionals are key to bringing donors and charities together. In this course, students will learn the terminology and key principles of fundraising and examine corporate sponsorship and fundraising tactics and strategies. Students will apply knowledge to industry case studies and prepare a full event sponsorship strategy, proposal and recruitment plan.
COMM-3080Comm for Tourism & Hospitality3
This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of tourism and hospitality, focuses on professional written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing - organization, grammar, style, clarity, and tone - are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the workplace in order to meet the needs of employers and/or the communities they will serve.
ECON-3008Global Economics3
A study of the principles of micro and macro-economics, as related to the distribution of goods and services in the tourism/hospitality industry. Major topics include the theory of supply and demand, output and price determination, market structures, government intervention, labour markets, global trends and economic performance. The course also focuses on fundamentals of personal finance, including budgeting, banking trends, credit options, asset management, investment strategies and retirement planning.
MKTG-1111Marketing Strategy for Events3
Effective marketing is crucial to the success of any event and this course aims to provide event planning students with an understanding of the basic concepts and processes of marketing. Students will learn how to identify their target market for an event, conduct research, examine and apply elements of the marketing mix and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of digital and social media channels to drive event sales and profit.

This course is an intermediate level course on the elements of logistic planning for event management. A successful event requires detailed planning; through this course students will continue to develop their event planning skills focusing on specifics such as: venue selection, registration, food & beverage, program planning, staffing, transportation and security. Students will gain critical experience into the many details required of an event manager within the industry and will have the opportunity to plan out their own live event under the guidance of industry professionals.
PLAN-1035Meetings & Conferences3
In this course, students will learn the specific requirements needed to design, plan, implement and evaluate Meetings and Conferences. Students will become familiar with all aspects of these type of events; from the development of exhibitor packages, site selection, site plan development and marketing and promotional strategies. Students will contribute to the planning and/or hosting of a conference or meeting (live or virtual) during this course and will use real event case examples to supplement their learning.
ENTP-3007Event Entrepreneurship3
In this course students will develop the entrepreneurial characteristics and attitudes necessary to succeed in today's competitive and dynamic business environment. Students will learn the different forms of business ownership and the skills needed to start and manage a small business as well as how to write an effective business plan. Individually, students will participate in an online entrepreneurship simulation where they will have the chance to practice those skills by running their own business in a virtual environment. Then working in teams, students will research and create a business plan for their own small event planning company.
BEVR-1026Beer, Wine & Spirits3
In this course students study the history and production process of wine, spirits and beer and learn how to objectively evaluate these products and market them in a hotel or restaurant setting. Students will practice pouring, mixing and tasting various beers, wines and spirits and participate in a field trip. Successful students will gain industry certification from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) in the UK, one of the world's leading providers of wine education.
BUSI-3042Business, Law & Finance for Events4
This course will help students develop an understanding of the business and law environment in Canada and the various math, financial, legal and business skills required in today's workforce. Students are exposed to a variety of business management tools and study topics such as monetary and fiscal policy, financial reports, accounting, budgeting, and legal concepts and issues. Case studies, videos and project work are utilized to demonstrate understanding of these concepts.

Create a global impression as a conscious leader within the hospitality sector. This course is intended to provide students with the knowledge of how to use effective leadership and management strategies to affect change on a global scale. Students will become leaders with the capacity for a global mindset and an ability to lead in multicultural settings.
DEVL-5008Career Planning3
DEVL-5008 is designed to examine the many ways the career path of an event planner could unfold, and to develop strategies that will enable you to be successful in your chosen career path. We will focus on your goals for your career, how to achieve them, and how to pivot to meet the changing needs in your field. Networking within the industry will be stressed, and strategies for creating your network will be discussed. Both a professional cover letter and resume will be developed and your interview skills will be honed. Emotional and social intelligence skills will be emphasised, as today's employers are looking for employees that bring intelligence, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills to their workplace.
DEVL-3011Digital Portfolio3
Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of events during the event planning program and the portfolio provides an opportunity to display their event planning experience in the best light. In this course, students will build a well branded digital portfolio that includes their event before and after photos, designs, centrepieces, testimonials, inspiration boards, awards and certifications. The aim is to give our students and future event professionals the leading edge when it comes to marketing their services to potential clients or employers.
PLAN-5003Event Management 26
This is an advanced course in professional event management, providing students with an opportunity to demonstrate their learning over the course of the program and add to their event-planning portfolio. Working collaboratively in small teams, students will design, execute and evaluate an event. Recent examples include a charity gala, a concert, a sports tournament and a mystic and holistic fair; the possibilities are endless! As well as the actual execution of the event, students are assessed on their collaboration skills, their in-class participation and their event planning process.
MGMT-3097HR & Volunteer Management3
In this course students will explore the intricacies of the role of a human resource professional in the events industry. We will focus on the importance of employee engagement and how positive progressive management techniques can ensure success at every level of the organisation. Students will develop an understanding of labour legislation as it relates to employees and volunteers in Ontario workplaces.
MGMT-3098Risk Management & Insurance3
The course explores risk management from the perspective of the event planner. Strategies and best practices to reduce risk will be explored, along with types of insurance. Emphasis will be in the areas of contracts, waivers, escrow and risk management practices. Students will participate in a final project to create a risk management plan for an event.
