Program Overview

Electromechanical Engineering Technician is a two-year Ontario college diploma program combined with a co-op component. Students will learn to analyze, modify, maintain, and repair electromechanical components. Additionally, students will learn project management skills, and the ins and outs of mechanical prints, tolerances, and the mechanical nuances of a system. Machines continue to shape our world and this program will give you the necessary skills to meet the demand.

Your Learning Experience

Automated processes and machines continue to shape our world in remarkable and complex ways. Their design, maintenance and function relies on skilled professionals. The Electromechanical Engineering Technician (Co-op) program will provide the skills to give your dreams the jolt they need.

You’ll learn the principles of robotics and as you progress through the program you'll be eligible to earn a FANUC Robotics Certification through our FANUC Robotics Certified Education Robot Training. You’ll also learn the principles of PLC automation, HMI development and pneumatic control circuits.

The range of skills needed for success in the modern economy are diverse, so you’ll also study project management, laws and ethics, reason and writing in preparation for an exciting and challenging career. The EMN program is a two-year, four-semester program of academic study and practical application. As a co-op program, students will get the chance to get hands on experience in their chosen field.

Students will also get to demonstrate their mastery of electromechanical principles and skills through a 15-week capstone project. Students will learn the principles of PLC automation, HMI development and pneumatic control circuits. The basics of mechanical prints, tolerances and the nuances behind designing and building modern electromechanical machinery are taught through AutoCad and SolidWorks. Additionally students will develop the necessary critical thinking skills to be capable of analyzing, modifying, maintaining and repairing electromechanical systems.

Here are some co-op jobs that have kick-started the careers of some Electromechanical Engineering Technician students before even graduating! 

Electromechanical Harness Assembler
Set up and fabricate cable and sub-assemblies and troubleshoot manufacturing problems to limit downtime.

Electromechanical Technician
Perform circuit board testing and repair.

Engineering Assistant
Assist in the mechanical design and build of industrial equipment production and development.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

1. fabricate and build electrical, electronic, and mechanical components and assemblies in accordance with operating standards, job requirements, and specifications.
2. interpret and produce electrical, electronic, and mechanical drawings and other related technical documents and graphics for a variety of stakeholders in compliance with industry standards.
3. select and use a variety of troubleshooting techniques and equipment to assess, maintain, and repair electromechanical circuits, equipment, processes, systems, and subsystems.
4. maintain and repair electrical, electronic, and mechanical components, equipment, and systems to ensure that they function according to specifications and to optimize production.
5. support the design and production of mechanical components by assisting in the specification of manufacturing materials and processes.
6. apply, analyze, build, install, commission, and troubleshoot a variety of mechanical, electrical, and electronic control systems, logic and digital circuits, passive AC and DC circuits, and active circuits
7. install and troubleshoot basic computer hardware and programming to support the electromechanical engineering environment.
8. maintain and troubleshoot automated equipment including robotic systems.
9. establish and maintain inventory, records, and documentation systems to meet organizational and industry standards and requirements

This course is an introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of engineering drawings. 2D (AutoCAD) and 3D (Solid Works) CAD software will be introduced and applied to related projects and assignments. Orthographic reading, dimensioning and fasteners will also be covered. Drawings will be produced and plotted using both the AutoCAD & Solid Works software.

This course explores the structure, practice, and ethics related to the world of work. The fundamental legal principles and ethics practised by employers are examined. Maintaining a safe, healthy, and stable work environment is a focus of this course where students learn elements of the regulations and codes of conduct for the workplace. Students develop an understanding of the history and relevance of various workplace mandates such as WHMIS, health & safety committees, and the Canadian legal system.

This course introduces students with basic electronics concepts and some simple rules that lead students to be able to build a wide range of practical electronic devices/applications. The subject begins with the fundamental concepts, such as Boolean logic, number systems, standard logic circuits. The components and basic operation of microprocessor based systems are studied to provide students with an understanding of the internal operation of programmable devices like PLCs. A series of laboratory exercises are designed to demonstrate and reinforce the concepts and rules presented in theory.

This course will introduce technology students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
ELEC-1129Electrical 14
This course introduces both the theoretical and applied concepts of Direct Current (DC) electricity. It is the foundation course where students will study and analyze resistive, capacitive and inductive circuits, and apply the laws and theorems both in the classroom and the laboratory environment. Included will be topics such as Ohms Law, series and parallel circuits using resistors, capacitors and inductors under DC conditions. Kirchhoffs Laws and other electrical theorems will be used to study and solve these circuits. In the lab the student will use a number of test instruments such as the digital multimeter and the oscilloscope to measure the parameters, thus combining theory and practice.
ENGR-1033Wiring for Automation3
In this course students will explore the fundamental concepts of wiring low voltage control circuits, sensors and devices found in modern automoation, Electrical and safety code requirements will be explored as well. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of electrical schematics for wiring through their creation and use in wiring projects. Topics will be explored through the use of lectures and lab activities.
