MGMT-6172Incident Management System3
This course provides students with an orientation normally used for executives, administrators, policymakers, emergency planners, and coordinators. It builds on the foundational aspects of the Incident Management System (IMS) 100 course and provides students the advanced knowledge and application of the features, principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Management System. The course focuses on the large range of roles and responsibilities in dealing with emergencies, from first response to those assigned to a supervisory position in a larger incident within an IMS organization. This course also provides the vital understanding required to be able to operationalize theoretical processes throughout each of these roles. The course focus is utilizing the methods, logistics, and responsibilities of incident commanders, planning, controlling, and managing required resources.
EMGT-6020Mitigation & Prevention Strategies1
This course will prepare the students to examine how mitigation and prevention strategies may eliminate and/or reduce the impact of an emergency. Critical infrastructure, both structural and non-structural, will be reviewed to examine proactive measures that could be planned and operationalized to determine effectiveness in both business and operational continuity environments. Historical success in mitigation and prevention strategies will be studied through case study review and analysis. Students will develop a mitigation/prevention strategy for an identified risk and be able to apply these teachings to various elements.
EMGT-6019Emergency Management Foundation2
This course provides participants with an overview of emergency management in Ontario including the systems and processes for preventing, mitigating, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies and disasters. Participants will learn about the key provisions of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, and understand the principals of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment. Participants will also have the opportunity to identify the roles and responsibilities of various levels of government and other key organizations involved in emergency management.
EMGT-6012Organizational Resilience-Intro3
This course provides participants with an understanding of organizational resilience and the ability to anticipate, prepare, respond, and adapt to times of emergencies. This is a crucial factor in maintaining an expected level of operation within your organization. Components of resilience include human resource deployment, relocation of operations, and business continuity concepts. Participants will understand how leadership styles during disasters and emergencies often shift between various models to achieve desired operational goals to minimize disaster impact, based on the different phases of an emergency. Participants will also understand how communications to external and internal stakeholders differ.
EMGT-6022Business Continuity & Resource Mgmt 13
A vital component of an emergency management plan is planning for the disruption of business with the goals of a smooth and timely return to normal business operations for the affected business services. This course provides a detailed understanding of the professional practices and requirements in planning for businesses to maintain a continuity of operation in the event of an emergency. This course is intended for anyone who is new to the business continuity process and wants to understand what business continuity is and what is involved in building and maintaining a Business Continuity Management (BCM) program.
COMM-6044Emergency Information Management2
Crisis communication, in its wide variety of forms, remains a critical element to our success in all five phases of Emergency Management - Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery. Each of these phases presents both unique and connected styles, mediums, and messaging within the Incident Management System. In this course, students will gain an understanding of the components of a crisis communications plan and develop the operational skills to support the crisis communications plan, focusing on the effects of the information process on the required decision-making in both the planning of and operational response to critical incidents. Students will gain an understanding of how the media operates in a crisis, how to proactively work with the media during a crisis, and how to work through the media to reach all key audiences and stakeholders. Finally, students will engage in a series of assignments, both individually and in a group setting, that will require them to complete a series of messaging reports, applying knowledge of these principles, and applying considerations on how best to approach the crisis communication planning process.
EMGT-6016Emergency Planning & Management4
This course relates the core components of emergency management to the creation and implementation of a plan to prepare for and respond to natural, human, and technologically caused emergencies. The course focuses on fundamental project management approaches and how an emergency can be addressed. Students will apply these theoretical approaches to a variety of situations while addressing the impacts of relevant legislation(s), standards, regulations, and procedures. Students will apply the learned techniques to several small and large projects and case studies which will be developed, peer-reviewed, and delivered to identified community partner(s).

EMGT-6023Emergency Management Design & Technology3
This course expands on the foundational knowledge that students were exposed to in Emergency Planning and Management. Learners will understand and apply the same management principles throughout the stages of a Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, with a focus on the response and recovery phases. Students will also concentrate on the technology that exists around data management, cloud management, and contingency planning. Students will also explore the complexities of climate change and how it is changing emergency management planning.
EMGT-6009Recovery Phase Planning3
This course addresses how recovery plans are developed to formalize the process for an effective return of activities to the new norm and to maintain a continuity of operations as outlined through a business continuity program. The recovery plans focus on specific roles and responsibilities for control group members, organizations, and industry sectors. Differences between short-term and long-term recovery plans will be discussed along with challenges that may occur during the various phases of recovery. Supporting plans will also be developed leveraging resources from external sources including Provincial & Federal government agencies.
EMGT-6024Program Evaluation1
Within this course, students will gain both conceptual and application principles related to auditing and evaluating processes contained with the Emergency Management environment. Learners will utilize skills and learned capacities to expand on their ability to identify, assess, and apply risks and associated risk management models to develop auditing and evaluation practices to ensure effective and efficient practices are standardized. This course will review details on how to direct an independent and objective auditing assessment of emergency management or business continuity programs.
FLDP-1023Emergency Management Field Practicum3.6
This field practicum experience is designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply the concepts and understandings developed in the program within an Emergency Management based environment. During the practicum students will assess, research, and address a variety of issues in Emergency Management in various corporate, municipal, provincial and federal agencies. Students will also be applying learned communication and emergency planning concepts in determining, assessing, and completing any assigned tasks and projects that may be assigned.
EMGT-6025Business Continuity & Resource Mgmt 23
This course continues to detail the complexities of developing, managing, and maintain a BCM program from its initial stage of implementation right through its various stages of maturity. Various testing methods best suited for each level of maturity would also be introduced. To effectively implement a plan ensuring a continuity of operation, this course will describe the steps necessary for threat risk assessments along with building out a business impact assessment. Finally, using these tools as a baseline, develop practical action plans to test and maintain into the future.
EMGT-6026Exercise Design 12
Students will explore the basics of emergency management exercise design and how exercise design is a key component of emergency preparedness. Students will review the concepts of both singular and more formal multi-year exercise program, understand the functions of the exercise program management team and the foundations of what an exercise will address through testing. Learners will understand the different concepts of exercises, including the processes of table-top exercises, workshops, seminars and immersion simulations (field exercises). Key concepts will include and expand on planning, logistics, and risk assessment and application to an operational testing capacity.
EMGT-6027Design Continuity4
This course will provide a further expansion of the Recovery phases of Emergency Management. where students will form an exercise design team that will focus on aspects of the briefing, control, conduction, and evaluation of a complex exercise. Students will enhance their knowledge of continuity by focusing on the development of recovery efforts resulting from significant emergencies. The emphasis of this course will center around the 'Getting Back Better' strategies that have proven successful in our current times. Critical infrastructure, community services, and the establishment of sustainability elements will be addressed in this course.
EMGT-6028Exercise Design 24
This course is designed to enable students to develop, implement, deliver, and manage complex exercises that will focus on associated and identified risks. Students will understand and deliver exercise programs in various roles and understand the relationships that exist within the management team. Students will focus on the need for careful planning and controlled activation as well as the development of contingency planning for input delivery within the exercise. Students will deliver a tabletop exercise to an emergency management team of one of Fanshawe College's Community partners. Students will also be required to provide a 360-degree review report complete with feedback, an audit process, and areas of concentration that resulted from the exercise delivery.
