Student Auxiliary Program

The Student Auxiliary Program has been active since 2011 and is the first of its kind in Canada. Campus Security Services generally deploy between six and eight Auxiliary Volunteers throughout the academic year, who conduct general and community patrol and provide valuable community service. Student Auxiliary volunteers receive training and work in uniform alongside our Special Constables and the rest of the security team in various roles.

How to Join the Student Auxiliary Program

The Student Auxiliary Program offers eligible first-year, full-time students the chance to work alongside security staff in maintaining a safe campus environment while gaining valuable experience. Volunteers assist with crime prevention, community patrols, event security, and emergency response.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a first-year, full-time student at the London campus
  • At least 18 years old
  • Hold a minimum Class "G2" Driver's License
  • Complete a valid police records check
  • Commit to 15 volunteer hours/month and 8-10 hours of initial training

How to Apply
Submit your application and resume to the Campus Security Service Control Centre by the deadline. Interviews will take place in late September and early October. Successful applicants will complete mandatory training and sign a Volunteer Agreement before starting.

Use of fake or forged medical notes

The use of fake, purchased or altered medical notes—sometimes known as Verification of Illness (VOI) forms—is a matter of serious concern at Fanshawe College.

Some students may attempt to avoid exams or assignment deadlines by submitting forged documents. However, this action constitutes a criminal offence, a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, and a serious academic offence.

Key facts

  1. Forgery is a criminal act under Canadian law and may result in criminal charges.
  2. Academic penalties may include suspension or permanent expulsion from the College.
  3. Trust and integrity are essential in academic and professional environments. Once compromised, they are difficult to restore.

Common misunderstandings

  1. Submitting even 'just one note' can result in permanent academic consequences.
  2. Just because fake templates are available online or through AI, that does not make their use acceptable or legal.
  3. Whether a document is purchased, borrowed, or self-generated, it is still considered forgery.

Long-term consequences

Engaging in forgery can result in:

  1. A permanent academic record of misconduct.
  2. Loss of credibility with instructors, employers, and peers.
  3. Difficulty obtaining references for future employment or educational opportunities.

A single forged note can undermine years of hard work. Once integrity is questioned, every future action may be scrutinized more harshly.

Proper procedures

If you are sick or need to be away from mandatory class time, lab work or tests, please make sure you communicate with your professor(s) and program coordinator or academic advisor to find out what is required. In some cases, you may be required to book a legitimate consultation with a licensed doctor in order to obtain a medical note/VOI directly (this would be given to you following an in-person or virtual appointment).

Note: Students who do not have access to a local doctor may contact Student Health Services at the Fowler Kennedy Clinic for assistance.

Remember, no part of a signed medical form may be altered. This means:

  1. You may not reuse a previous note by changing the date
  2. You may not use someone else's note by changing the patient's name
  3. You may not create a similar note by copying the doctor's signature

Any change to a signed medical note/VOI is considered forgery.

Support and alternatives

Fanshawe College recognizes that students may face exceptional circumstances. In such cases, the following options are available:

  1. Take a mental health break if experiencing burnout or stress
  2. Request academic accommodations through your academic advisor, program coordinator or other appropriate college channels
  3. Seek support from Counselling Services; Accessibility Services; Student Health Services at the Fowler Kennedy Clinic; the Fanshawe Student Union (FSU); or your academic advisor, student life coordinator, program coordinator or other trusted Fanshawe College resource
  4. Reach out to local community resources for additional help and support, if needed.

Forging a medical note is never worth the risk. We understand that student life can be overwhelming, but there are always other legal, safe and honest ways to seek help. Please don’t risk your future.

Stay honest. Stay safe.
