Definition: Applicants over the age of 19 who do not have a high school diploma.

Admission requirements: To be admitted as a mature applicant, you do not need a high school diploma, but you must have credit in the courses listed in the admission requirements. You can apply to Fanshawe College without having completed all of the admission requirements; simply send us proof of enrollment in any courses you are taking for admission requirements purposes. Fanshawe must receive a final mark for required admission courses three weeks prior to the start of classes.

Mature applicant equivalency assessments*: If you are ineligible for a program because you are missing only either an English or Math requirement, the English or Math Equivalency Assessment may be for you. Successful competency on this assessment will not provide you with a course credit, but it can help you gain admission to an open program at Fanshawe College.

  • English: We offer English Equivalency Assessments for the following high school course: 12C College Preparation English (ENG4C). You will write an essay in response to a short reading (called a prompt). The essay will be handwritten. You will have 50 minutes to read the prompt and write the essay.
  • Math: We offer Math Equivalency Assessments for the following high school courses: 12C Foundations for College Mathematics (MAP4C), and 11C Foundations for College Mathematics (MBF3C). You will complete a pre-assessment online, be assigned customized online modules to complete for revision and learning, and them do an in-person post-assessment.

*Please note: Currently all programs in the School of Health Sciences and the School of Public Safety are not accepting either the Math or English Equivalency.  Select programs in Building Technology and the Music Industry Arts program are also not accepting the English Equivalency.  If you have any questions about whether these equivalencies are right for you, please contact an Admissions and Pathways Advisor at 519-452-4277.

Mature applicant challenge exams: For applicants requiring chemistry, biology, or physics for admission, Fanshawe College offers challenge exams for a moderate fee. The grade achieved on the exam will be used for admission purposes. To see if you are eligible for a challenge exam and to make arrangements to write, please contact a Admissions and Pathways Advisor, 519-452-4277, advising@fanshawec.ca or book an appointment at www.fanshawec.ca/advising.

Academic upgrading: Fanshawe College offers academic upgrading in specific courses, Pre-College Preparation/Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS) and the Academic & Career Entrance (A.C.E.) Certificate at each of our campuses: London, St. Thomas, Simcoe, and Woodstock.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition - Get the credit you deserve: Through the Prior Learning Assessment process you may be eligible to achieve college credit for skills and knowledge you have already gained through work or other life experiences. Prior Learning Assessment is a formal process that enables eligible candidates to demonstrate learning that they believe is equivalent to the learning outcomes of one or more Fanshawe College courses. Credit acquired through this process not only provides recognition for prior learning but may also reduce the amount of time required to complete a certificate or diploma. For more information, please see www.fanshawec.ca/plar.

Fanshawe Student Union: The Student Union offers many family oriented events throughout the year including special family events at special prices. Participate in your student government and help make a difference. The Student Union President can also act as advocate for you, should you have a concern about college policy. For more information: contact 519-452-4109 or www.fsu.ca.
