We hear a lot about self-care but it’s something that many people struggle with. It is critical for our mental health and well-being. Practising self-care involves making time for things that improve our life physically, mentally, intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually.

You are Unique

There is no one-size-fits-all with self-care!  What works for some may not work for you and that is okay. Self-care is a sweaty session in the gym or quiet time with a good book. Both are valid strategies. The key is finding what works best for you.

The benefits of engaging in self-care:

  1. Reduced stress and improved mood
  2. Improved quality of sleep
  3. Reduce the chances of burnout
  4. More likely to have a positive outlook on life
  5. More energy
  6. Improved resilience – equips us to better handle challenges
  7. Increased confidence and self-esteem
  8. Enhanced productivity – improves our ability to concentrate and focus
  9. Helps us feel grounded in the present moment
  10. Lowers anxiety and stress

But there’s no time!

As a counsellor, I have heard many students say they have no time for self-care. This is understandable given the many demands on post-secondary students – classes, homework, labs, group work, essays, jobs, family responsibilities and the list goes on. However, I am going to challenge you to engage in some form of self-care every day. Self-care does not have to be grand. Keep it simple: enjoy that first sip of coffee/tea, notice the sights and sounds while walking on campus (nature, trees in full bloom), do a micro workout (5-10 minutes of moving your body). To help guide you, we've created a Self-Care Calendar that includes a month's worth of self-care ideas you can try. Try them out and notice how you feel before and after doing an activity. Is there anything you would add for self-care?
