Program Overview

Construction Engineering Technology is a three-year advance diploma for students interested in overseeing the construction of residential, industrial and commercial projects. Students will learn to estimate project costs, develop a construction plan, schedule projects, and perform on-site inspections using the latest technology. Graduates will be prepared for their career by learning soft skills required to be an effective leader.

Your Learning Experience

The Construction Engineering Technology program will develop the technical knowledge and skills required to oversee and manage the construction of residential, industrial, commercial and institutional projects - from the conceptual planning phase through to project completion and contract closeout. 

 

Students within the advanced diploma will learn how to estimate labour, material and costs, write and understand contacts, establish a project’s budget, develop a site logistic plan, schedule and manage construction projects, and perform on-site field engineering, field inspections, and utilize the latest onsite technology. You'll also learn the soft skills required to be an effective, respected leader - both in the office and on-site.

 

Graduates will be well-positioned to obtain several professional designations with multiple governing bodies in the construction industry such as Certified Engineering Technologist, Gold Seal Certified, and Professional Quantity Surveyor.
 

The program provides the technical knowledge and skills required to manage the construction of industrial, commercial, and institutional buildings from the planning stage through to completion. Studies include construction materials and methods, construction equipment, surveying, project management, scheduling, estimating, building economics, and construction contracts. Twelve months of co-operative work experience is an integral part of the program.

Co-Op Opportunities 

The Construction Engineering Technology  - Management program offers a co-operative education component, which provides students the opportunity to gain invaluable first-hand workplace experience in their chosen field. Here are some co-op jobs that have kick-started the careers of some Construction Engineering Technology  - Management students before even graduating! 

General Labourer

Work under a Project Superintendent or Foreman and contribute to ICI construction and maintenance projects in a hands-on capacity, learning about how the physical aspect of a construction project is undertaken.

Junior Estimator

Work under a Chief Estimator, Estimator, or a Project Manager, to  determine quantity and cost estimates for current projects and upcoming bids.

Construction Coordinator

Work under a project manager in a support role in all aspects of document management, presentation, and trade communication and coordination.

Work with a Project Owner, Subcontractors, and Company Senior Management to award contracts, establish budgets, prepare forecasts and monthly reports,  procure materials, and monitor and control the financial aspects of a construction project.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or a mature applicant with the following courses

- Grade 12 English (C or U)

- Grade 12 Math (C or U) - MCT4C preferred*

* A minimum grade of 60% is required for Grade 12 Foundations for College Math (MAP4C). This math course may not provide adequate academic preparation for this program and therefore applicants with this course may be required to take additional preparatory Math as part of their program of study.

Students who do not meet the admission requirements are recommended for academic upgrading. A conditional offer may be possible with proof of enrolment. Alternatively, applicants may choose to do the one-year Pre-Technology preparatory program that provides all the admission requirements for this program.

Applicant Selection Criteria

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)
  3. Achievement in the Admission Requirements
Note:
  • Admission to the Fanshawe College Pre-Technology program does not guarantee admission in a subsequent year to the Construction Engineering Technology - Management program. Successful completion of the Fanshawe College Pre-Technology program, however, does enable the student to be given additional consideration when applying to the Construction Engineering Technology - Management program. The Pre-Technology program is the preferred designated preparatory program for admission to the Construction Engineering Technology - Management program.

This course will introduce students to basic software and technologies being utilized by the construction industry. Students will be introduced to document writing, data management, drawing markup, and basic quantity surveying software.
MATH-1036Mathematics in Technology 13
Students explore the following topics: scientific notation, estimation, basic algebra, trigonometry and radian measure applications solutions of right triangles and carry out mathematical applications in Architectural, Civil and Construction Technology.
SFTY-1029Health & Safety3
This course will familiarize students with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Regulations, governing bodies, and safety best practices, relevant to the construction industry in the province of Ontario.
COOP-1020Co-operative Education Employment Prep1
This workshop will provide an overview of the Co-operative Education consultants and students' roles and responsibilities as well as the Co-operative Education Policy. It will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to co-operative education work assignments and will prepare students for their work term.
MATS-1028Methods & Materials 15
This course will introduce students to various types of commercial construction and associated materials. Investigations will include: soil excavations, below-grade concrete formwork and placement, and masonry.
WRIT-1039Reason & Writing 1-Technology3
This course will introduce technology students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
CONS-1059Quantity Surveying 13
This is an introductory course for the quantity surveying of simple commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings on a level site. Students will learn to apply the principles and rules for take-off, calculation of material areas and volumes, including the measurement of concrete quantities, and blueprint reading.
SURV-1010Construction Surveying 13
This course is an introduction to surveying basics and will enable the student to use the fundamental survey equipment required for construction site work. Exercises in level operation, distance measurement, angle layout and measurement, and note keeping will be undertaken on field sites.
