Fanshawe Business-Marketing student Paulyn recently completed her 8-month co-op work term as a Social Media Strategist in Fanshawe’s Counselling and Accessibility Services department. She shares three things she wishes she knew before starting a co-op placement.

1. Apply for a co-op Placement that will help you excel in your chosen field of study

When I was choosing where to apply for my co-op placement, I tried my best to find a workplace and get a contract and hadn’t even considered my line of work as a Business-Marketing student. When I got my co-op here at Fanshawe as a Social Media Strategist, I didn’t realize how much I needed this co-op work term to excel in my specific career field.

I’m so thankful that I had a lot of support from my directors and others from areas across the College to help me create wonderful content that’s helpful to Fanshawe students.

2. Your co-op will alter the way you think about your career

While you’re on your co-op work term, you’re getting hands-on experience on your future lifestyle or your future workplace. You realize how much you love working in a specific field. I was able to create content that engages a lot of students and lots of different departments.

3. Just keep learning

Learn something new every day where you’re working. You’ll learn something new about yourself, your perspective and make the most out of it in your co-op. It’s not just about grades and earning money, it’s all about your life experience and the learning goals you will achieve by the end of your co-op work term.
