Program Overview
Fanshawe's MRI program allows you to build on your existing skill-set while diversifying your career opportunities. The best part? A flexible program delivery allows you to maintain employment while taking the program. You’ll combine in-class meetings one day per week with online learning activities, and following the completion of two 16-week semesters, you’ll participate in a 16-week clinical practicum at an affiliated hospital site.

Your Learning Experience
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) program is a one-year graduate certificate that fulfills the educational requirements of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). Applicants must be registered as Radiographers (RTR), Nuclear Medicine Technologists (RTNM), Radiation Therapists (RTRT) or Sonographers (CARDUP). This program prepares graduates to be clinically competent, communicate effectively, think critically and apply problem-solving skills in the clinical environment.
This face-to-face/online hybrid program provides the opportunity for technologists to develop discipline-specific knowledge that is coupled with a clinical practicum. Classes/labs are one day per week, allowing students to maintain employment while growing professionally. Two-16 week levels consist of courses that provide a thorough foundation in MR safety, physics, patient care, procedures, pathology and cross-sectional anatomy. Students will learn from MRI practitioners, Radiologists and Physicists. By participating in labs (patient care simulation and scanning on a 3T magnet) students utilize existing knowledge while gaining practical, hands-on experience.
Level two of the program includes a 16-week clinical rotation (600 hours) where students are placed in an inpatient/outpatient facility allowing them to develop the valuable skills necessary for an entry-level practitioner. The last component is the Consolidation and Review course that prepares students for the national exam.
This program is currently in the process of registering with Accreditation Canada/EQual. This registration reflects our commitment to providing quality education that aligns with accreditation and regulatory standards.

Perform all required MRI examinations as prescribed by physicians or radiologists.

Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to :
1. Perform, in accordance with current standards, various magnetic resonance imaging procedures involving the head and neck, spine, chest, abdomen and pelvis, as well as the musculoskeletal and vascular systems.
2. Apply the theoretical concepts of physics to the work required in the delivery of MRI services.
3. Ensure the safety of clients and staff when delivering MRI services.
4. Interact effectively with the clients and their families.
5. Prepare and position the client according to the established protocol, in order to optimize image quality.
6. Use the MRI equipment, accessories and software efficiently.
7. Assess the client's condition during the diagnostic test and/or the procedure and intervene effectively, if necessary.
8. Apply the theoretical concepts of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to the work required in the delivery of MRI services.
9. Efficiently transfer and store images, using the various media available (PACS, film, CDs, hard drive).
10. Work with the various members of the health care team: radiologists and other physicians, physicists, nursing staff and other health professionals.
11. Perform duties professionally and as a member of a health care team.
12 Evaluate MRI system performance, using quality control procedures.

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:- Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
- Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

Post-Admission Requirements
The following items are applicable to the program and are time sensitive. Please refer to www.fanshawec.ca/preplacement for important information about preparing for placement by the due date.
- Possession of a Standard First Aid course certificate (either St. John Ambulance or Canadian Red Cross or equivalent) and a Basic Rescuer course certificate - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) in accordance with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Canadian Guidelines for CPR
- Evidence of Good Health
- Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening, including a check of the Pardoned Sexual Offenders Database
- Placement Agreement
- Completion of an MR Screening Form
- In some specific cases, there are absolute contraindications (e.g., some cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implant) to the field of MRI that would prevent a person from practising in this area. If you find yourself in this situation you need to be aware of this restriction - you will be ineligible to attend the clinical practicum of the MRI program and therefore will not be eligible to graduate from the MRI program.

| MRIP-6006 | Patient Care & Safety for MRI | 4 | ||
| This course focuses on MR safety principles, including concepts that relate to MR equipment and the unique risks to anyone in the MR environment. The importance of taking on the role of a leader in education (of self and others) in the prevention of MR incidents is emphasized. Various decision-making strategies based on developed guidelines for safe MR practices are introduced and implemented. A focus on cultural diversity and lifespan considerations when caring for and communicating with patients, families and members of both the inter and intra-professional team are discussed. The professional and appropriate delivery of care before, during and after MRI procedures, magnet and patient-related emergencies within the MR environment and documentation is emphasized. The content also provides basic concepts of pharmacology, and covers the instruction and practice of venipuncture, and safe administration of contrast media and/or intravenous medications. In addition, content introduces quality assurance measures used in maintaining image quality. | ||||

| This course focuses on the physical principles, equipment and instrumentation of Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging. The application, advantages and limitations of various MR scanning parameters and protocols, and the impact on image contrast will be emphasized. Knowledge of physics principles for image formation, reconstruction and manipulation will be presented. Advanced techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS), Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA/MRV), and Echo planar Imaging (EPI) will be studied. | ||||

| This course focuses on the study of human anatomy as seen in axial, sagittal, coronal and oblique planes for the neurologic, abdominal and pelvic, musculoskeletal and vascular systems. Application of anatomical knowledge will be applied to MR images and other clinical imaging modalities. | ||||
