The Human Resources Management program is a one-year post-grad program designed for university and college graduates looking to specialize their skills in human resources. This program provides you with functional knowledge in core areas of human resources: recruitment and selection, training and development, human resources planning, occupational health and safety, organizational behaviour, finance and accounting, principles in human resources management, compensation and benefits, and labour relations.

A part-time, online (asynchronous) offering for this program is available.

Human Resources Management is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program designed for university or college graduates, providing them with functional knowledge in core areas of human resources. Beyond the core curriculum, the program also offers courses in software, Canadian employment law, management of strategic HR projects and professional communications.  

 

You’ll also have the opportunity to apply to further develop your consulting skills with the option of substituting two courses for the intensive community consultancy program, working with live clients to solve real problems.

 

This program includes all nine credits required for the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) and Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designations from the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA).

  7. Use and evaluate technology to support operational business functions related to human capital.
  8. Design, implement and evaluate organizational development strategies to promote operational effectiveness.
  9. Develop human resources practices and communication strategies that are equitable, diverse, inclusive, accessible and culturally competent.
  10. Create and evaluate strategies for self-development to enhance performance and maintain professional standards.
  11. Collaborate with invested parties to execute human capital initiatives that support the organizational business plan.
  12. Analyze data to forecast and recommend workforce and talent management strategies to support decision making.

MGMT-6041Principles in Human Resource Management3
This course will introduce students to the role of the human resources professional in the field of human resources management. Topics such as job analysis, training and development, recruitment and selection, planning, performance management, employment legislation and career development, with additional functional areas of human resources will be presented. Through lectures, laptop instruction, teamwork, self-assessments and experiential exercises, students will be exposed to the human resources management field in the business environment. This course is HRPA approved and is required to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE1) and/or the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE2). These exams are part of the attainment of the externally accredited entry level Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation (CKE1) and/or the advanced level Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation (CKE2), respectively. You must achieve a minimum of 65% in any one of the nine CHRP/CHRL courses and an overall average of 70% in these nine courses to be eligible to write the CKE1 and/or CKE 2. Students will learn how to develop, implement, and evaluate training needs and training programs. In addition, students will learn about the importance of training and development as a strategic approach to improved productivity, efficiency and effectiveness in the organization. Students will be required to design and facilitate a training session in class. This course is HRPA approved and is required to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE1) and/or the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE2). These exams are part of the attainment of the externally accredited entry level Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation (CKE1) and/or the advanced level Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation (CKE2), respectively. MGMT-6042Organizational Performance3
Students in this course will gain an advanced understanding of how organizational effectiveness is dependent upon the interactions and relationships between individuals and teams within organizations. The content is based on theoretical models, the research underpinning these models and how these translate into the contemporary Canadian workplace. The course will examine topics ranging from employee motivation and performance management to organizational structure, culture, development and change. Students will explore topics around the role of individual values, perception and decision making and how these can influence team dynamics and leadership. Students will complete a personality assessment and relate their results to course concepts. Students will also undertake a major case analysis applying course concepts. This course is HRPA approved and is required to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE1) and/or the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE2). MGMT-6043Recruitment Strategy & Selection3
This course will assist the student in the development and evaluation of the recruitment strategy including areas such as recruitment, interviewing and the orientation process. Other topics will include learning the best methods to develop and implement advertising strategies to attract potential candidates. Students will learn how to develop selection processes as well as use valid assessment tools to establish valid criteria for hiring. Students will also develop strategies to align recruitment and selection with the goals of the organization. This course is HRPA approved and is required to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE1) and/or the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE2). COMM-6019Advanced Professional Communication3
This course focuses on refining and advancing students workplace communication abilities. The advanced communication documents and strategies covered include presentation skills, research skills, business document writing, meeting and management team strategies, business etiquette, and advanced employment communications. Additionally, students learn about interpersonal and intercultural communication (high/low and monochromic/polychromic context) concepts and strategies.
COMP-6064Excel for Human Resources3
Recognizing that proficiency in Microsoft Excel is a critical competency in today's data-driven HR landscape, this course provides students with the essential skills to effectively manage, analyze, and report on diverse HR data. Utilizing a range of resources, including software simulation platform, the curriculum progresses from foundational Excel concepts, including file management and basic operations to advanced data manipulation and analytical techniques. Students will gain practical experience with essential functions, including the power of PivotTables for summarizing large datasets. The course culminates in a comprehensive individual assignment where students will apply their acquired skills to analyze real-world employee turnover data, acting as HR consultants to uncover insights and present actionable recommendations to executive stakeholders. Through consistent, hands-on practice, students will develop the confidence and expertise to leverage Excel as a strategic tool for data-driven decision-making in any human resources role.
MGMT-6045Canadian Labour Relations3
This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of the history, development, operation and future of Canadian labour relations. It examines the political and social context in which labour, employers, the government and society function. The course provides the framework in which HR professionals will be working in contemporary unionized environments. Through exploring concepts, case studies and practical applications, the course will take the student through the process and issues of union organization and certification to the complexities of collective bargaining and the administration of the collective agreement. The course will offer a closer look at public sector unions, the nature of the labour management relationship and contemporary issues. This course is HRPA approved and is required to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE1) and/or the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE2).
