    There's never been a better time to be an artist. The new media landscape is ripe with endless career opportunities that will test the limits of your imagination, while providing a powerful and meaningful entertainment experience to consumers. If you're looking for a career creating magic, the Interactive Media Design program will give you the skills to bring your creativity to life.

    You'll polish your skills in computer-based web design and programming, 3-D, special effects, animation, effects for film and video and design for print. You'll take courses in design, coding, marketing and media management and incorporate industry-standard tools from companies such as Adobe, Maxon, etc., as well as open-source technologies for Web application development. You'll be a dynamically trained artist with the technological know-how to embark on an exciting career. You'll also get hands on, practical training from industry professionals, and have the freedom to create your own visual and audio masterpieces.

At Fanshawe I found my first mentor who helped me to grow up as a coder. Fanshawe opened doors into the interactive media industry.   • Admission Requirements - 2018/2019

    OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U),
    University/College (M), or Open (O) stream
    OR
    Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE)

    English Language Requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

    • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 550 for the paper-based test (PBT), or 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements. 
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
    • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
    • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
    • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
    • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

    Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:

    1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
    2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

    Interactive Media Design-2018/2019

    This course will introduce contemporary media students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
    MMED-1020Digital Media Theory & Project Managem't3
    This is an Interactive Media preparation course, the student will be exposed to all the technologies, and methodology used in the two year program. Time Management principles and self learning strategies are a key objective of the course.
    MMED-1018Design & Image 13
    A course to introduce students to elements and techniques of good digital design, with an emphasis on designing for interactive interfaces. Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Illustrator CS5 software will provide the foundation for this course.
    MMED-1003Multimedia Production3
    This course will introduce students to the range of tools and applications current in the interactive field, as well as the techniques for developing a Web site with graphics, text and basic hypertext functionality. This course will introduce tools and techniques with an emphasis on effective site and interface design as well as optimized media and code development.

    This course will introduce students to the theory and application of visual based design and layout currently used in the interactive media field. This course will introduce tools and techniques with an emphasis on effective forms of communications through a variety of visual based applications.

    This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of media, focuses on professional written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing - organization, grammar, style, clarity, and tone - are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the media workplace in order to meet the needs of employers and/or the communities they will serve.

    This course will introduce students to the range of tools and applications current in the interactive field, as well as the techniques used for the developing of web based interactive applications. This course will introduce tools and techniques with and emphasis on effective application and interface design using optimized assets and code.
    MMED-1006Web Development 23
    Extending topics introduced in the first year, students will cover the Web design/development process in greater detail, with Dreamweaver as a primary development tool. Topics covered include basic and enhanced responsive site structure, local site management, CSS design, CSS layout applications and browser compatibility issues. Some use of Javascript will also be covered.
    MMED-3011Design & Image 23
    A course to introduce students to elements and techniques of industry standard digital design, with an emphasis on designing for interactive interfaces. The latest version of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software will provide the foundation for this course.
    MMED-1016Motion Design 13
    In this course students will be introduced to the principles of design for motion graphics. Kinetic typography, colour theory and basic timeline animation concepts will be used in the development of title sequences, bumpers, trailers and station IDs.Students will utilize industry standard software in the development of motion graphics including Cinema 4D, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere and/or Final Cut Pro.

    This course will focus on the tools and techniques for creating high-end 3D graphics and animations for use in a variety of applications. The core software application to be used in this course will be Cinema 4D and After Effects.
    MMED-3002Electronic Image Production3
    The goal of this course is to educate all students of the importance of logos, style guides, brand guides and documentation. General overviews and examples will be shown to reinforce the structure and flow of professional documentation. Students will learn essential skills in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, how to use the local network and learn general operational methods used in the Interactive Media Department.

    This course will introduce students to the range of tools and applications current in the interactive field, as well as the techniques used for the developing of web based interactive applications. This course will introduce tools and techniques with an emphasis on effective application and interface design using optimized assets and code.
    MMED-3003Web Development 33
    A continuation of both the Authoring and Internet topics introduced in first year, this course will extend students skills with current tools for developing dynamic, database driven applications for the World Wide Web. This involves an introduction to database structures using mySQL, the use of PHP to control and display database information, and more detailed work with dynamic Web content.

    This course will introduce students to the range of tools and applications current in the interactive field, as well as the techniques used for the development of web based interactive applications. This course will introduce tools and techniques with an emphasis on effective application, interface design, and programming using optimized assets and code.
    MMED-3006Video Production3
    Students will develop detailed skills in Video Production for a variety of multimedia applications. Additional topics will include 3D and Special Effects. Independent group projects will be assigned and evaluated. The emphasis will be on content development for video and the use of software for post-production (e.g. Adobe After Effects).
    MMED-3013Multimedia Marketing/Business Management3
    This course introduces the students to business models common in the interactive industry, strategies for marketing interactive services, business planning, effective communication, and other topics relevant to the interactive service industry. IDP professionals are increasingly looking to start and operate their own businesses as an alternative to salaried positions with larger corporations. Students will acquire an understanding of topics such as the formation and operation of a freelance business.

    Students will have the opportunity to work in an audio-visual/multimedia production environment, to develop real-world skills in project planning and team-focused multimedia development.     Program Description

    The Interactive Media Design program will professionally prepare students for an evolving job market in digital media design, development and production, providing comprehensive training in new media technologies with an emphasis on web application design, interactive rich media, and current technologies for developing usable, media-rich sites and applications. The curriculum will combine courses in design, coding, marketing and media management and incorporate industry-standard tools from companies such as Adobe, Maxon, etc., as well as open-source technologies for web application development.

    • Students entering Level 1 of the program in January will continue into Level 2 of the program in the Summer Term and Level 3 in the Fall Term.
