Level 1
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
WRIT-1037Reason & Writing 1-Contemporary Media3
This course will introduce contemporary media students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
PHOT-1062Practical Photography 12.5
This course is a practical introduction to small format digital camera techniques and colour and B/W printmaking. The emphasis will be on learning different camera settings to control exposure and image quality. This is a project course whereby students demonstrate practical camera skills, knowledge and photographic competency by submitting regularly scheduled photographic assignments. Students will also have the option of producing a first semester portfolio. Most of the work will incorporate digital workflow and image editing software, using laptop computers, and inkjet printers.
PHOT-1072Lighting Techniques3
Students will be introduced to safe studio practices and studio lighting through demonstrations and completing required assignments. Students will learn about small product, tabletop lighting set-ups, metering studio lights, proper colour balance and using light modifiers.
PHOT-1008Production Techniques 13
This course is an introduction to working with digital photographs. Students will begin with digital asset management and learn how to import, and organize their image files. They will also learn basic image editing, color correction, and printing with an inkjet printer. Students will be introduced to the editing tools found in both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.

Students will be introduced to design principles that will help develop their eye for composition, lighting, overall image aesthetic and storytelling techniques all while enhancing their creativity. Emphasis will be on composition and subject through in-class exercises and assigned projects. Students will reflect on their work with their peers to improve their overall visual communication.

Level 2
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
COMM-3075Communications for Media3
This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of media, focuses on professional written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing - organization, grammar, style, clarity, and tone - are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the media workplace in order to meet the needs of employers and/or the communities they will serve.
PHOT-1063Practical Photography 22.5
This course is a continued exploration and practice of digital camera techniques and colour and B/W printing. It is also an introduction to on-camera flash, and off-camera flash. The emphasis will be on improving image quality through camera settings and exposure control with ambient light, flash, or a combination of both. This is a project-based course whereby students will learn and demonstrate practical photographic skills. In addition to scheduled assignments, students will participate in the Student Image Competition, and produce a printed portfolio for the year-end Portfolio Review.
PHOT-3028Lighting Techniques 23
This course is a continuation of Lighting Techniques and will introduce more complex lighting arrangements. The demonstrations and assignments, will include photographing objects with reflective surfaces such as metal and glassware. Students will also explore a variety of lighting styles used in portraiture. Students will tether their cameras to a laptop allowing them to examine exposure and colour balance while shooting.
PHOT-1015Creative Design for Photo 23
Students will learn advanced principles of 2-dimensional design & composition as well as the importance of light and all its aspects on composition and form. Students will also learn basic principles of colour, perspective, contrast and tonality and the various treatments of space. As part of developing a photographic vocabulary, projects will be preceded by written proposals to develop the student's ability to preconceive an image and then follow it through to produce a final product/image.
PHOT-1016Production Techniques 23
Students will work with digital cameras and computer imaging programs to produce and present images to professional standards. Students will use digital applications to manipulate, create, and control photographic images. Computers will be used to work with digital files and final images will be produced on-line and with digital printers.
PHOT-1090Self-Promotion and Small Business2.5
In this course students will apply their photography skills to create promotional materials and give their portfolio an online presence. Through various hands-on assignments using industry standard software the students will design a photography brand suitable for Print, Web and Social Media, that will prepare them for further self-promotion and marketing.

The course will expand the students general knowledge of the history of photography and an overall visual literacy of the periods, concepts and how the various advances in photography changed society.

The course is designed to explain and instill the basic principles of the marketing function and facilitate the practical application of these principles. The course will focus on techniques used in sales promotion, media advertising, market research, public relations/publicity and distribution.
PHOT-3018Practical Photography 32.5
This course introduces the student to the operation and application of high-end digital cameras, small flash and monolights. The use of proper, on-location lighting, remote triggering systems and camera techniques, in the areas of Advertising, Public Relations and Portrait photography are covered.
PHOT-3026Commercial Photography3
This course prepares students for camera operation and lighting schemes used in the commercial retail studio. Students will photograph advertising assignments that present unique challenges to the photographer and that require more advanced lighting set-ups and special light modifiers. The course also examines various styles used in this market and some discussion will include how to price different types of jobs.
PHOT-3019Digital Workflow2.5
This course will explore various techniques of using digital cameras combined with laptops for image control and time efficiency with consistent quality. The emphasis will be on producing high quality colour and black and white images for use on-line or as prints and books. Maximum image production workflow from the image capture stage to the final printed form will be a major element of this course. Students will work with various digital camera systems under a variety of lighting conditions. All assignments will be mapped with the learning outcomes.
PHOT-3032Production Techniques 33
Students will gain more advanced photo editing skills using Adobe Photoshop. Emphasis will be on producing professional quality images from digital files. Printing and preparation of digital images with practical in class exercises. This course will expand upon the skills and techniques learned in PHOT-1016.
PHOT-3034Videography for Photographers 12.5
Students will be introduced to DSLR video practices through demonstrations, assignments, and participation in class group work. Students will learn camera settings, lighting, audio recording techniques, and movements specific to video capture. This course will also introduce students to video editing software required to produce professional quality videos.

MGMT-3003Small Business Management2
Artisans and professionals often decide to start and operate their own businesses as a career alternative to wage employment. The central focus of this course is on initiating self-employment, new ventures and preparation of saleable proposals. Students will acquire a basic understanding of the creation, formation, operation and control of a freelance or more formal smaller-scale business. In depth coverage shall be given to: market potential analysis, the need for capital and sources of that capital. These skills can be adapted and employed in the students everyday personal life, with regards to planning, organized thought and financing.
PHOT-3023Practical Photography 42.5
Using digital cameras, the student will produce images of commercial, advertising, event and public relations photography to a professional standard. Also, produce a concise resume and portfolio.
PHOT-3024Portrait Photography2.5
This course introduces the fundamentals of studio and location portraiture using digital cameras, portable lighting systems and available lighting. The areas of portraiture covered will include male and female posing and portrait styles, couple and group photos. Appropriate lighting styles will be emphasized to enhance and present portrait subjects in modern and classical studio portraiture. The psychology of portraiture and working with subjects is integrated throughout the curriculum delivery.
PHOT-5004Videography for Photographers 23
Students will continue to work within the confines of the DSLR video practices through presentations, assignments, and participation in class group work. Students will expand on prior learning of camera settings, lighting, audio recording techniques, and movements specific to video capture. This course build upon the students' knowledge of video editing software required to produce professional quality videos.
PHOT-3033Photography - Specialization3
Photography is a broad career field, and there are many creative approaches that will lead to your success. Choosing an area to specialize will allow you to target your skills set as well as channel your efforts. Through guided demonstrations and practical exercises, students will have a critical look at their own skillset and apply appropriate techniques to help them determine a possible niche market and career path.

This course requires the student to complete 30 hours of working in a Photography related business or providing volunteer photography service on-campus or in the local community. The work must be unpaid and must be related to professional photography or the photography industry. The intent of this course is to provide the student with experiential learning through either job-shadowing, or active participation in a professional setting. Students will participate in activities to prepare them for Field Placement. This will include professional communication skills, researching and securing a placement and professional conduct while on Field Placement.
