From the pre-production phase to the intensity of in-studio creations, this Ontario Graduate Certificate program builds on your previous experiences in the music industry and sound production.
Our industry-trained and award-winning faculty teach digital audio, digital video and multimedia theory, and you’ll receive hands-on training with advanced audio technology equipment in our state-of-the-art post-production studio. Working independently and in collaboration, students learn Dolby ATMOS immersive sound, sound design, mixing, field recording, ADR, Foley and game sound techniques in the production studio.
Time spent learning the practical elements of post production results in graduates who have a dynamic, diverse and professional portfolio to successfully enter the industry. Career opportunities in post production are as diverse as your skills - anywhere that sound production and/or mixing is required!
This is a highly specialized, advanced program in the theory and practice of all phases of producing creative sound for film, television, gaming, web animations, live audio, video and all new media forms. Concept building is emphasized through various means: audio production and surround sound design and mixing, field recording, ADR, Foley, live sound and game sound techniques. Students are engaged in individual and collaborative projects involving practical and process oriented instruction, working with other graduate certificate programs and departments within the College, as well as independent lab time.
Industry linkages and competitive portfolios are built based on high level team building skills and intensive problem solving. This specialization prepares students well for career opportunities within the audio production and post-production industry.

Organize, edit and link segments of narration, music and sound, which can be paired with original video content.

Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:
1. Practice leadership in all areas of pre-production, production, and post-production in the audio industry.
2. Initiate and maintain professional working relationships with clients and related program professionals within the College and/or community.
3. Develop and generalize industry-specific advanced technical and problem-solving skills.
4. Plan audio sound design through project management, scope of project and vision for pre-production, production and post-production.
5. Manage multiple audio and video projects of various types simultaneously while assuming different roles.
6. Produce market-ready materials with focus on audio for picture, live production and broadcast including mixing, editing, capture, script-writing, casting and budgeting.
7. Create a business plan for entrepreneurial, freelance and corporate work in the fast-paced audio-post production field.

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:
- A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 88 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.5 with no score less than 6.0 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements.
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 70 with no score less than 60 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 59, with test results within the last two years
- A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 176 with no language skill less than 169, with test results within the last two years
- Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9 or 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:- Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)
- Achievement in the Admission Requirements. Students applying for the Audio Post-Production Program with a two year Music Industry Arts Ontario College Diploma should have obtained a “B” average in all first year and second year Audio Workstation, Engineering and Post Production courses at Fanshawe, or a “B” average in equivalent courses from another institution. Applicants with less than a “B” average will be considered only on the recommendation of the Academic Manager.
- Preference will be given to graduates of the Fanshawe College Music Industry Arts program, with most recent graduates having priority
- Applicants who are not Music Industry graduates will be evaluated for musical and technical abilities in the area of sound design for picture, surround sound mixing, music composing/recording/mixing, video editing in academic and professional environments

Audio Post Production Theory 1 This course examines the advanced theory and practice of sound in film, television and multimedia. Audio pre production/planning, production and post production phases and workflows are looked at. Current production techniques frequently used in the post-production and live sound industries will be explored. Current synchronization, delivery and storage formats are explained. The balance between aesthetics and techniques used in sound and video production will be considered. | ||||

This course strengthens skills in advanced audio and video post production techniques. Hands-on skills are regularly taught requiring the use of digital audio and digital video recording and editing technology. Applications include audio for video, surround sound production for picture, production dialog recording and editing, ADR, Foley, sound effects, sound design, segment based and linear based music writing, audio premixing and mixing. Students may have the opportunity of working with students from other graduate and under-graduate programs within the college. | ||||
DIGL-6010 | Audio Post-Production Lab 1 | 8 | ||
This course revolves around audio and sound design lab study. Over 200 hours of lab time is assigned for both short term and full term projects. Professor assigned and self-directed audio projects are done. Solo projects, group projects and projects with other programs within the college are also assigned. This course introduces the student to audio that is used in post production visual media. The course will additional focus on recording, editing and mixing for 5.1 surround sound format. | ||||
FILM-6021 | Production Sound | 2 | ||
This course will introduce students to basic sound theory, and guide them towards developing listening skills and recording techniques to allow for the effective capture and use of sound in film and television productions. Students will also learn about the technical and creative aspects of integrating sound with picture during the post-production process. Professional sound recording techniques will be demonstrated and applied, providing students with the skills and knowledge to capture high quality sound in a wide variety of situations and environments. Students will practice production sound recording on digital recorders and cameras, and edit sound on a non-linear video editing workstation. |
