Your Learning Experience

Enhance your career with this specialization in health administration systems and health information management in this one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program. You’ll learn about global advancements in the use of technology in electronic patient records, automated voice transcription, digital imaging concepts, ADT (admission-discharge-transfer) systems messaging and workflow. You’ll also develop valuable skills in data analysis and the creation of dashboards.

Upon graduation, you’ll be eligible to pursue acquiring the Certified in Health Information Management (CHIM) certification, from the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM). Graduates may also be eligible to pursue other certifications from Digital Health Canada.*

Career Information

Fanshawe’s Health Systems Management program will prepare graduates to take advantage of the growing opportunities in the in-demand field of Health Information Management (HIM). Graduates can expect to be hired as the following:

 

  • Health Information Manager - oversees and organizes patient data; complies with government legislation; connects various health care functions via IT applications
  • Health Systems Manager - ensures quality assurance; assesses project feasibility and scope; gathers and analyzes data and costs
  • Medical Coding Specialist - ensures accuracy in coding healthcare services, procedures, diagnoses and treatments
  • Health Data Analyst - analyzes healthcare data to assist in decision making
  • Record Retention Specialist - coordinates the storage and removal of medical records

 

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  1. Assess organizational requirements for health information system technologies (HIST) and evaluate the impact of HIST on business/clinical processes, and on health services delivery to inform and support incremental change;
  2. Evaluate and develop health information management practices, policies and processes to support client care, organizational goals, operations, and regulatory compliance;
  3. Differentiate between and among relevant local, national and global health care and health information management issues, trends, technologies and standards to support health information systems and processes;
  4. Ensure compliance with the legal health obligations, as well as with the professional, ethical and organizational standards that ensure privacy, security and confidentiality in the access, retention, storage, extraction, and disposal of personal health information;
  5. Assess and examine the completeness, accuracy, consistency, timeliness and integrity of health information throughout the management of its lifecycle;
  6. Work professionally, ethically and collaboratively with stakeholders and as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team, to enhance the collection, distribution, use, security and awareness of quality health information and its impact on client care;
  7. Utilize diverse research methodologies, theories and health information/digital health practices to support evidence-based decision-making;
  8. Apply principles of project management, quality improvement methods, financial management, operational planning, and quality management to support health care operational performance and effectiveness.

A Two- or Three-Year College Diploma, or a Degree, preferably in Information Technology, Mathematics, Writing, or Health Sciences. Other backgrounds considered on a case-by-case basis.

Acceptable combination of related work experience and post-secondary education as judged by the College to be equivalent to the above

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

Students will be introduced to the main concepts of Health Systems Management including the collection, use and disclosure of health records in an evolving healthcare landscape and technology environment. The current health information issues, standards, trends structure and function of health care communities in general, and health care facilities specifically, will be examined. The implication of legislation on health systems management will be explored. Principles of communication, leadership, change management of quality data and information, while maintaining security of health information throughout its life cyle are addressed. The importance of professional ethics, legal and policy implications of health information systems privacy and confidentiality will be emphasized throughout the course.

In this course, students will develop clinical knowledge through exploration and competencies in the subject areas of Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, and Pathophysiology. Emphasis will be placed on correct spelling, pronunciation, usage as it applies to the interpretation of patient data in the health information field of practice.

The skills and ethical responsibilities of a health system management professional will be presented. Common industry health and e-health terminology will be introduced to integrate computational and managerial knowledge and experience with health related knowledge and experience. Assessment, implementation and evaluation of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system in a typical healthcare environment will be explored to advocate healthcare through information technology management practices.

Health systems management relies on data analysis and reporting. This course focuses on the tools used to collect relevant data and to present its meaning through visual reports and interactive dashboards. Data will be extracted and manipulated using various tools and queries. Numerous statistical functions will be introduced.

Introduces students to the concepts and features of electronic health record (EHR) systems. Students will learn about the functionality of the EHR as it applies to health information management, health information technology and allied health. Students will gain an awareness of how the electronic health record supports efficiencies and accuracy with both inpatient and outpatient facilities and how EHRs contribute to the goals of increased patient safety, privacy and security.

Focusing on the Canadian health care systems, topics include: history of healthcare in Canada; role of federal and provincial/territorial governments; government funding models; practitioners and practice settings; population health; health and the individual; law and ethics; and current and future issues.

This course presents and helps to develop some of the skills required to achieve academic and career success for graduate students. Areas of focus include college resources, study skills, and time management among other skills. The importance of Academic Integrity will be a main focus.
